Jim Varney is Getting a New ‘Ernest’ Documentary

Jim Varney in Ernest Goes to Camp | Buena Vista Dist.

The first trailer has been released for the upcoming Ernest documentary featuring Jim Varney, and it’s going to excite any fan of the classic movie series… knowhutimean, Vern?

It’s no secret that we absolutely love Jim Varney here at Horror Geek Life. Earlier this year, we celebrated his memory on the 20th anniversary of his death, and the consensus from fans is that Varney is badly missed more than ever two decades after losing him. Especially since we’ve entered the age of neverending reboots in Hollywood, there’s no telling how many more Ernest films we could be getting in recent years if Varney were still with us. Given how crazy the world has gotten, it would appear that the world needs Ernest now more than ever.

Sadly, that can never happen, but the new documentary on Varney’s career can still give us something to look forward to. The film is produced as a collaboration between Justin Lloyd (Varney’s nephew and biographer), Daniel Butler (Ernest franchise writer), and David Pagano (“Ernest Goes to Podcast” co-host). Called The Importance of Being Ernest, the trailer was released this month on what would have been Varney’s 71st birthday, and you can watch the video for the trailer below.

As of now, word is that the documentary is “coming soon,” and no official release date has been attached to the film. An official website has been launched, and in addition to featuring the trailer, the website also lets visitors supply an email address to stay notified on updates to the film. Hopefully, the release will be coming sooner than later, as the trailer will leave fans wanting more. You can visit the official website at BeingErnestFilm.com.
