Following 2015’s Goosebumps Night of Scares, game developer Cosmic Forces brings fans Goosebumps Dead of Night. This first-person, family-friendly survival game takes players head-to-head with some of R.L. Stine’s most infamous monsters. With Slappy the Dummy leading the way, there is certainly some charm and fun to be found, along with sheer frustration.
After Slappy the Dummy unleashes spooky characters from the Goosebumps franchise, it is up to you to find missing book pages to make the madness end. Along the way, some of the baddies you will come up against include a ghoul from Attack of the Graveyard Ghouls, Murder the Clown from A Nightmare on Clown Street, the werewolf from The Werewolf of Fever Swamp, gnomes from Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes, and even Gummy Bears from Haunted Halloween. You must out sprint, hide, and dodge the monsters as they encounter you.

With various characters voiced by Jack Black, the humor is lighthearted and whimsical, truly adding to the fun of the game. The controls are very easy to grasp, which is important since the Cosmic Forces stresses that this is for gamers of all ages. While the jump scares and hide-and-seek may frighten at times, those familiar with Five Nights at Freddy’s or Hello Neighbor probably won’t be as phased.
Unfortunately, the fun is pushed back often in lieu of constant cheap attacks, to the point where leaving an area at times is impossible without racking up the death count. The good news here for achievement junkies is that you get achievements the first time a specific monster kills you. That may soften the blow initially, but you may rage quit a few times before you advance. I know I certainly did.
Those who are up for a challenge and enjoy the Goosebumps series may want to give Goosebumps Dead of Night a go. However, some players may not feel it lives up to the $39.99 USD price point.
