TV Recap: ‘The Boys’ Season 2 Episode 5 – ‘We Gotta Go Now’

the boys season 2

Chaos, bloodshed, and vicious verbal and physical violence, The Boys’ newest episode in season 2, “We Gotta Go Now,” shines a light. Stormfront, Homelander and Butcher, with some great help from Hughie and Mother’s Milk, letting the episode build over several storylines and paying off each and every time. While Homelander may be the central figure, and with good reason, the bulk of the cast has important moments that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Butcher has issues to work through, but there is no running from who he is and the enemies he has made. Hughie and Mother’s Milk reminds him of this, with some wonderful moments smack in the middle of suburban life, making for some very surreal moments. These anti-heroes are far from perfect but they do make the point, yet again, that they are better together than apart.

Meanwhile, Kimiko is working through her rage and grief by ripping though bodies in nasty ways, making some cash at the same time. It safe to say the body count will only rise, and although Frenchie tries to reason with her, how do you stop someone with that power who needs to grieve? It is an interesting dynamic between these two, but tied together in the worst way possible.

Then there is Homelander. A simple mission goes terribly wrong and his need for public acceptance, while having horrible public relations skills, is still a captivating combination. Of course, add to that his bloodthirsty need for power, violence, and incredible vicious streak, you have a character that Antony Starr plays to perfection. Watching him get played by Stormfront is almost painful, but so fitting of his ego-driven persona. He is a repulsive character that makes your skin crawl, especially every time he smiles.

As usual, The Boys takes shots at whatever is in their collective field of vision. The Church of the Collective continues to beat on Scientology, racism in all its ugly forms, absolute power corrupts absolutely…the list is endless and thankfully, this show is not at all shy at highlighting these topics, exposing them for all to see.

There are some great moments between characters, both in good and ugly ways. Stormfront continues to let people know just what it is she stands for, and Hughie stands up to Butcher in a way that elevates the relationship between them. Homelander’s interaction with all characters is especially abrasive, violent, and creepy this week, as he struggles to stay in control when all he really wants to do is the exact opposite.

While episode four might have been a slower burn, “We Gotta Go Now” juggles numerous plot lines, each with huge possibilities and different possible outcomes. This is The Boys at its finest– interesting ideas and a ‘take no prisoners’ attitude, no matter where the path may lead.
