New Jeffrey Dahmer Series in the Works at Netflix

My Friend Dahmer (FilmRise)

A new limited series about Jeffrey Dahmer is in the works at Netflix. Deadline reports that the series, dubbed Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, is co-created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. Carl Franklin and Janet Mock are attached to direct, with Mock also writing. Richard Jenkins has been cast as Jeffrey’s father, Lionel Dahmer, but the part of Jeffrey himself hasn’t yet been cast. The producers are also meeting with actresses to cast someone in the lead female role of Glenda Cleveland, one of Dahmer’s real-life neighbors whom repeatedly tried to warn law enforcement about the serial killer.

Monster tells the story of “one of America’s most notorious serial killers, largely told from the point of view of Dahmer’s victims, and dives deeply into the police incompetence and apathy that allowed the Wisconsin native to go on a multiyear killing spree. The series dramatizes at least 10 instances where Dahmer was almost apprehended but ultimately let go. The series also is expected to touch on white privilege, as Dahmer, a clean-cut, good-looking white guy, was repeatedly given a free pass by cops as well as by judges who were lenient when he had been charged with petty crimes.”

Dahmer has been portrayed on screen several times in the past. This includes 2017’s My Friend Dahmer, based on the graphic novel of the same name. That film starred Disney Channel actor Ross Lynch as Dahmer, with Alex Wolff playing Dahmer’s closest high school friend. The notorious serial killer was also famously played by Avengers star Jeremy Renner in a 2004 biopic. For something more bizarre, you can see director Ford Austin playing Dahmer in his 2010 comedy-horror flick Dahmer Vs. Gacy, which co-starred Randal Malone as John Wayne Gacy.

Production on Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story will reportedly begin in January.
