Tim Burton is Rebooting ‘The Addams Family’ for TV

The Addams Family (Paramount Pictures)

Tim Burton is rebooting The Addams Family for the small screen. According to a new report from Deadline, the Edward Scissorhands director is developing a live-action television series adaptation of the popular franchise. Alfred Gough and Miles Millar will serve as showrunners and head writers, and Burton might even direct every episode. Gough, Millar, and Burton will also executive produce. The project is now being shopped with Netflix as a likely contender to pick up the streaming rights.

We can presume that the series will be similar to the previous iterations, following a kooky family living in a spooky mansion with their monster butler and pet human hand. Reportedly, Burton’s updated version will take the family and put them into today’s real world. Per Deadline, the story will be “set in present times and be from the perspective of Wednesday Addams and what the world would look like to her in 2020.”

The Addams Family has been adapted for both the big and small screen on several occasions. It was a television series in the 1960s when it made the family’s iconic theme song famous. As the song continues to be used in other adaptations, nearly everyone knows the words to the classic tune.

A feature film adaptation in 1991 from director Barry Sonnenfeld is also very well known. With an excellent cast including Raul Julia, Anjelica Huston, Christopher Lloyd, and Christina Ricci, the movie is one of the most celebrated films of its era. A sequel, Addams Family Values, was released in 1993.

An animated movie adaptation of The Addams Family was also released last year. Production on the sequel is now underway, and The Addams Family 2 will be in theaters come Halloween 2021. You can check out the recently-released teaser trailer for that below.
