Xbox Game Pass Adds ‘Day of the Tentacle Remastered’

Day of the Tentacle Remastered (Double Fine Productions)

Day of the Tentacle Remastered is now available to play for Xbox Game Pass subscribers. Originally, the game was released in 2016 for PC and PlayStation 4, but was just recently ported to the Xbox One. It is a remastered version of the 1993 computer game Day of the Tentacle, which was a sequel to the cult classic video game Maniac Mansion.

In Day of the Tentacle, the sinister Purple Tentacle — literally a talking, hopping purple tentacle with a slimy green suction cup for a mouth — leaves the Edison family home on a mission to take over the world. Bernard Bernoulli returns from the original game along with two new friends, Laverne and Hoagie, and the three must work together using time travel to put a stop to Purple Tentacle’s plans.

Because Dr. Fred is perhaps not as sharp of a mad scientist as he thinks he is, Hoagie is inadvertently sent 200 years in the past. Meeting famous historical figures like George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson, the shaggy metalhead must figure out a way to power up his time-traveling “Chron-o-John” to get back home.

Meanwhile, Laverne winds up 200 years in the future, landing in a world completely overtaken by thousands of Purple Tentacle clones that have since enslaved all of humanity. She’ll need to find out how to get back to the present and prevent this dystopian future from becoming a reality. Fortunately, with Bernard still operating in the present day, the three can send items to each other through time by flushing them down the John.

If that doesn’t sell you on the game, I don’t know what will.

Day of the Tentacle is a real gem of years gone by, and definitely a must-play game for fans of classic point-and-click adventure games. As a sequel, it’s also filled with Easter eggs for Maniac Mansion fans — such as Maniac Mansion itself, with the full game of the original PC version available to play on Weird Ed’s computer. While a visual update has the game looking more vibrant than ever, players can still play the game using the original 1993 graphics by switching back and forth with the click of a button at any time.

You can download Day of the Tentacle Remastered on Xbox Game Pass now. Also included with the new selection of titles are two other classic LucasArts adventure game remasters: Grim Fandango and Full Throttle. If you like Day of the Tentacle, you’ll definitely want to check those out too.
