Friday the 13th is still at the top of Jason Blum’s movie reboot wish list. Along with finding great success with reviving Halloween in 2018, Blumhouse has also taken to rebooting other classic horror films like Black Christmas, The Invisible Man, and The Craft. In a new interview with CinePop, Blum named the popular summer camp slasher series as the franchise he’d love to take on next, even if it’s not exactly an option right now.
“I would like to revive the Friday the 13th franchise, and I would like to make it [as a film],” Blum stated.
It’s no secret that Blum and his pals at Blumhouse have had their sights set on Jason Voorhees. Blum has spoken about his desire to make a Friday the 13th film several times in the past. Even before the infamous lawsuit, Blum had been trying to get the rights for Blumhouse to take on the franchise, but the stars just never seemed to align in the right way for the dream project to happen.
Blum is also not the only one gunning for the job. NBA legend and 2020 Finals MVP LeBron James, who’s also a huge Friday the 13th fan, tried to get the ball rolling on a reboot in 2018 through his company SpringHill Entertainment. Meanwhile, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives writer and director Tommy McLoughlin has also written a screenplay for a new sequel.
While there’s certainly great interest from both fans and filmmakers in seeing Jason’s hockey mask back on the big screen, nothing can happen until the legal battle over the rights to Friday the 13th is finally resolved. Likely, the coronavirus pandemic of 2020 has slowed down the legal process, and it remains unclear as to when a final ruling will be made. Once that day comes, expect Blum and who knows how many other film producers to try and pounce on the project immediately. For now, we’ll always have the twelve previous films.
