Stephen Chiodo hasn’t given up hope on making a Killer Klowns from Outer Space sequel, but says it’s up to the fans to help get it made. Released in 1988, the cult classic horror-comedy film is one of the rare titles from its era to never be given a sequel or reboot. That hasn’t been for a lack of trying, as director Stephen Chiodo and co-producers Charles and Edward Chiodo have been open to producing a followup movie for over three decades.
At one point, original star Grant Cramer said he was on board to reprise his role from the first film for a Killer Klowns sequel. Despite the Chiodo brothers’ efforts, the followup was never able to get a green light from a studio. It seemed to finally be making some traction in 2018 when it was reported that Syfy was looking to acquire the rights to the film, but nothing ever came to fruition on that front either. Last year, it was reported that a planned movie sequel — dubbed The Return of the Killer Klowns from Outer Space in 3-D — was axed by Disney after the House of Mouse acquired 21st Century Fox.
Fans might be giving up on ever seeing a sequel at this point, but Stephen Chiodo is now saying that the best shot in getting it made is making their interest clear to the current rights-holders at MGM.
“Look, MGM controls Killer Klowns. If [fans] write MGM and say, ‘Where’s our sequel? Where’s that property?'” Chiodo tells ComicBook.com. “There’s so many ways they can exploit this thing. It’s really the fan base. The fan base has to be more vocal to MGM more than us, because they control it. But I’m just so happy. That was a project that, we just wanted to make a film that we loved. Again, Forbidden Planet, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, all the films that we loved is thrown into that. And I’m really pleased that people responded to it.”
There you have it. If we’re going to turn Killer Klowns 2 into a reality, the fans need to band together and let MGM hear about it. For now, there’s always the original, which is currently streaming for free on YouTube Movies.
