News hit yesterday that writer/director Adam Wingard (You’re Next, The Guest, Godzilla vs. Kong) and writing partner Simon Barrett (You’re Next, The Guest) are working on a remake to the 1997 film Face/Off. However, Wingard today clarified via his official Instagram that it is not a remake, but a sequel. The filmmaker posted:
“I would NEVER re-imagine or remake FACE/OFF. It’s a perfect action movie. Simon Barrett and I are writing a direct SEQUEL!”
While it has yet to be clarified, Deadline states that the leads are expected to be recast. Neal Moritz will produce and David Permut will be executive producer on the Paramount Pictures film.
The original film starred John Travolta as an FBI agent and Nicolas Cage as a freelance terrorist and serious psycho. The two men swap identities through a face transplant in order to take each other down. It was directed by John Woo (Mission:Impossible 2) and opened to the #1 spot at the box office upon its theatrical release. Face/Off went on to rake in $245.7 million on a $80 million budget.
Wingar’s next upcoming film is the most anticipated of 2021, Godzilla vs. Kong. The film releases March 31st and will see Godzilla, King of the Monsters, and Kong, the Eighth Wonder of the World, battle it out against each other and those who want to destroy the beasts. The film’s cast includes Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Shun Oguri.
