The idea of anyone rebooting Jaws seems preposterous at this point to most anyone who’s ever seen the film, but it very well could have happened if not for Steven Spielberg. Per a recent report at Deadline, Spielberg’s Amblin Partners has reached a new deal with Netflix that will cover multiple new movies each year. Spielberg has since confirmed the news in a statement.
“At Amblin, storytelling will forever be at the center of everything we do, and from the minute Ted [Sarandos] and I started discussing a partnership, it was abundantly clear that we had an amazing opportunity to tell new stories together and reach audiences in new ways,” Spielberg said. “This new avenue for our films, alongside the stories we continue to tell with our longtime family at Universal and our other partners, will be incredibly fulfilling for me personally since we get to embark on it together with Ted, and I can’t wait to get started with him, Scott [Stuber], and the entire Netflix team.”
While this is certainly great news for Netflix that opens the door for Spielberg to help deliver many exciting projects, don’t count on a new Jaws being among them. Deadline also reports that Universal Pictures approached Spielberg about rebooting Jaws with the legendary filmmaker returning to produce. The suggestion was reportedly met with a “firm no” from Spielberg, a decision most every fan would probably agree with. It would seem that a reboot is never going to happen under his watch.

Released in 1975, Jaws was directed by Spielberg and written by original novel author Peter Benchley and Carl Gottlieb. It is widely considered to be among the very best movies of all time, even outside of the horror genre. The sequels might be fun in their own ways, but none were as epic as the first Jaws, and the notion of any kind of reboot or remake ever coming close is rather ridiculous. Fortunately, the original will always be there for fans to enjoy, having stood the test of time for over over four decades.
