Next year, Netflix will release a brand-new horror anthology series titled Cabinet of Curiosities, curated by Best Picture winner and horror master Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water, Pan’s Labyrinth).
The eight-part series has landed several amazing directors and writers from the horror genre, all specifically chosen by Guillermo del Toro. Many of the stories come from the filmmaker’s mind. Casting for the individual episodes has also been strong.
Here is what we know about the eight Cabinet of Curiosities episodes so far:
- Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) will direct an episode based on a story by Guillermo del Toro. Essie Davis (The Babadook), Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead), and Hannah Galway (Sex/Life) will star.
- Keith Thomas (The Vigil, upcoming Firestarter) will direct an episode written by Lee Patterson (Curve) and based on a short story by H.P. Lovecraft. Crispin Glover (Willard, American Gods) and Ben Barnes (Netflix’s The Punisher, Shadow and Bone) will star.
- Guillermo Navarro (cinematographer for The Devil’s Backbone, Pan’s Labyrinth) will direct an original Guillermo del Toro story, written for the screen by Regina Corrado (Deadwood, Sons of Anarchy). Tim Blake Nelson (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) will star alongside Elpidia Carrillo (Predator) and Demetrius Grosse (Lovecraft Country).
- David Prior (The Empty Man) will direct an episode, with David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight) writing the screenplay based on a story from Michael Shea. F. Murray Abraham (Amadeus, The Grand Budapest Hotel), Glynn Turman (Super 8, John Dies at the End), and Luke Roberts (Black Sails) will star.
- Panos Cosmatos (Mandy) will write and direct an episode starring Peter Weller (Robocop, Screamers). His Mandy co-writer, Aaron Steward-An, will join Cosmatos.
- Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) will direct another H.P. Lovecraft short story episode written by Mika Watkins (Origin).
- Vincenzo Natali (Hannibal) will direct a Henry Kuttner short story episode, written for the screen by David Hewlett (See).
- Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night) will direct an episode of an Emily Carroll short story written for the screen by Haley Z Boston (Brand New Cherry Flavor).
Though no official release date has been revealed, production has already begun in Toronto. The series is expected to premiere on Netflix in mid- to late 2022.
