For the first five episodes of Dexter: New Blood, we’ve waited for it all to hit the fan, as it always does in Dexter’s world. In episode 6, “Too Many Tuna Sandwiches,“ that time has come. The show switches gears, giving us more of what Dexter (Michael C. Hall) has tried to suppress, which worsens things. Of course, a son who, it seems, has inherited his Dark Passenger and another killer in this little town doesn’t help, either.
At the end of last week’s episode, Angela (Julia Jones), proving to be a capable police officer, connects all the dots, digs, and finds Dexter’s obituary. As she confronts him at the police station, Dexter does what he does best (besides killing): to come up with explanations for things. His explanation has a lot of truth to it, and you can see that on Angela’s face. However, he has broken the trust between them, to put it mildly, and now, while he tries to figure out how to save the relationship, his bigger concern is who in town knows his secret.
Dexter has a lot of concerns this week in “Too Many Tuna Sandwiches,” and that web of lies he so carefully constructed to start a life in the town of Iron Lake is fraying around the edges. A major part of that is Harrison (Jack Alcott), whose life is also unraveling, no thanks to Dexter (passing on his killer gene might not be his fault, but abandoning him….). Harrison wants to work for Kurt (Clancy Brown), but Dexter disapproves. Harrison does what any teenager would do: defies his father and does it anyway.
Dexter’s instincts may be off, but he’s right about Kurt. As the episode unfolds, we see the town’s other killer showing signs of stress and letting his anger get the better of him. Maybe he sees something in Harrison, or maybe it’s his predatory instincts, but those two together are bad news.
Suspecting that podcaster Molly Park (Jamie Chung) might be involved, Dexter finds her and Kurt chatting at the local pub, which Angela asked her not to do. Discreetly observing and recording the conversation, he follows them back to Kurt’s serial killer hideaway, and Dexter intercedes just in the nick of time.

This information confirming who he is, and Kurt being far too close to Harrison for his liking, all boils over at Harrison’s wrestling meet, where Harrison puts a non-lethal version of his Dark Passenger on display. Dexter warns Kurt off of Harrison, and the two eye each other like wolves among sheep. As if that tension isn’t enough, Dexter gets a call from Angela, who has found her dead sister in the cave where Dexter himself was looking to stash a body.
There is a lot to like in this fast-paced episode, which is helped along by Deb (Jennifer Carpenter), who plays both a support mechanism and an in-your-face blunt truth bit of conscience. Dexter and Harrison also play a great part in “Too Many Tuna Sandwiches” as they attend therapy together. There is so much that comes out and more that never can.
As we push forward and storylines collide, seeing the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow) make another appearance, albeit a small online cameo, is interesting. Still, even though he is dead, it looks like he will have some part to play in this endgame, and I am quite eager to see how things are shaping up.
