From Season 1 Ep 6 Book 74

In last week’s episode, From dragged its heels a bit, picking certain storylines to follow that were either a tad predictable or just uninteresting. However, in “Book 74, the series ramps the tension back up by throwing some interesting curveballs at the viewer regarding what’s happening in this town and with some people.

Jade (David Alpay) demonstrated that he’s not one to sit around and do nothing, even if he sometimes seems over-stressed. As one of the newest arrivals to this town and a smart guy, he devises a plan to try and contact someone to find help. He enlists the aid of Jim (Eion Bailey), who has made a strange discovery, so he is more than willing to help. The two get more than they bargained for with their little experiment, especially Jade, who has a vision that sends him down a bizarre rabbit hole that is either an important clue or he really is going mad.

Meanwhile, Father Khatri (Shaun Majumder) reveals he has a couple of secrets. One is that he knows Sara’s (Avery Konard) whereabouts and lies about it; another is what he has buried in a field. He thinks Sara can help as she communicates with the creatures in the forest. They reveal the secret he has buried (literally and figuratively) through her, creating serious questions about his past.

This episode has a back-and-forth storyline involving Boyd (Harold Perrineau) and Kenny (Ricky He). On the surface, it is about control and responsibility, but looking deeper, more about loss and family. We know Kenny lost his dad, killed by the creatures, and we know about the death of Boyd’s wife (though not the details). Both men are searching for absolution and connection, so when Boyd announces his plan to go into the woods and what it entails, Kenny is not pleased. We learn more about Boyd and these two men, who both suffer and need each other differently.

“Book 74” felt like the viewer was getting to pull at many different threads that began to untangle an even bigger puzzle. The mysteries were well thought out, the characters interesting, and the dread and tension that existed for most of the series have returned. Near the end of the episode, we find Tabitha (Catalina Sandino Moreno) has made a discovery of her own, cementing the whodunit/mystery feel to the episode, capped off by an ending that shows a character ready to make a really bad decision.

The showrunners have shifted more focus on the town, not letting the ‘monsters in the woods’ part of the story turn this into an endless bunch of cliches and things we’ve all seen before. As the mysteries continue to mount about the town, the viewers have been left with even more questions than before. It’s intriguing and this episode took the show in a few different directions, which was nice to see.

The question remains: can they tie it all together over the last four episodes? I’m not sure, but I’m enjoying the journey so far.
