A planned reboot of Big Trouble in Little China has been in the works for years, and while it remains to be seen in the film ever makes its way out of development hell, one star of the original movie hopes to be invited for a return. In the first film, released by director John Carpenter in 1986, James Hong co-starred as the villain, Lo-Pan, opposite Kurt Russell’s Jack Burton. Speaking with ComicBook.com, Hong shared his thoughts on the reported follow-up.
“Without Lo-Pan? How dare he,” Hong quipped when asked about The Rock’s reboot.
Reports of a follow-up to Big Trouble in Little China go back several years with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson attached. The actor and producer has been open about his desire to reboot the property, and in 2018, the project seemed to make progress when it was clarified that the movie was being developed as a sequel and not a remake. That potentially opens the door for original actors to appear.

Does this mean Hong will appear in the movie, should it ever be released? The actor admits he has mixed feelings. He says it’s best to “leave the classic alone,” but at the same time, if the sequel is going to happen, he’s hoping that The Rock will give him a call, as he’s more than willing to revisit Lo-Pan.
“Well, I think they should leave the classic alone,” Hong said. “However, I’d like to reappear in the new one and do something spiritually, like Star Wars where the characters come back and do a reprieve of some kind. Obviously, because let’s admit it, Lo-Pan is a huge part of that first one, so how can you forget him?”
Let’s hope The Rock is listening, because this is something that needs to happen. Perhaps we can also get Russell to make a return alongside him as an older Jack Burton.
