Shelley Duvall Returns to Acting in New Horror Film ‘The Forest Hills’

Dreznick Goldberg Productions

Hollywood legend Shelley Duvall is returning to the screen. Duvall, famous for her roles in classic films like The Shining, has not appeared in a movie since 2002’s Manna from Heaven. Having since retired, Duvall has spent the past two decades keeping to herself beyond an appearance on Dr. Phil in 2016. Now, as Deadline reports, Duvall is stepping out of retirement for a role in the upcoming horror movie The Forest Hills. You can see the first look at her in the film in the image above.

The Forest Hills comes from writer and director Scott Goldberg. Along with Duvall, the film stars Edward Furlong, Chiko Mendez, and Dee Wallace. Scott Hansen will produce with Dreznick Goldberg Productions and Digital Thunderdome Studios.

The film follows a “disturbed man who is tormented by nightmarish visions after enduring head trauma while camping in the Catskill Mountains.” Duvall plays the mother of the emotionally disturbed man (Mendez), serving as the inner voice of the character. Her involvement was important for Goldberg, who, as a big fan of The Shining, was determined to get the retired actress involved.

“We are huge fans of The Shining and it’s honestly one of my favorite horror movies of all time, up there with John Carpenter’s Halloween and George A. Romero’s Day of the Dead with the dark tones they delivered in their movies, along with perfect scores and elements that make them my personal favorites,” Goldberg said in a statement. “Shelley contributed to The Shining being an absolute masterpiece by giving her all, and performing in a way that really showcased the fear and horror of a mother in isolation.”

It’s not yet clear when The Forest Hills will be released, so we will have to stay tuned for more updates on the film.
