‘Evil Dead Rise’ Trailer Shows a Terrifying and Bloody Return to the Franchise

The much-anticipated trailer for Evil Dead Rise was released today, and it is everything we had hoped for. Missing is Bruce Campbell’s Ash Williams, as this installment focuses instead on adult sisters Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) and Beth (Lily Sullivan) and Ellie’s kids.

When Beth visits Ellie and her children in a rundown L.A. apartment complex, a familiar evil is unleashed. Overtaking Ellie’s body, the possessed woman terrorizes her children and sister as they battle to survive and save her. Taking the story out of the cabin in the woods and into a bustling city like Los Angeles was a bold move, but if the trailer is any indication, it is one that will pay off.

Speaking about this change in setting, director Lee Cronin told Total Film:

“It still needed to maintain some of the claustrophobia, and that translated really well from the cabin into an urban environment. This is about a family in a rundown building stuck in their apartment, so it follows the same rhythm but puts it in a more contemporary space.”

While the Evil Dead Rise trailer is more reminiscent of 2013’s Evil Dead remake, Cronin explained in the same interview that it would fit nicely with the original trilogy. Although the remake was considered a success by many fans, the drastic change in the tone set it apart. Cronin stated:

“It’s firmly in the universe. There’s a lot of fun callbacks, and there are direct lines to the past. But part of the goal of making this movie was to create something that could expand the Evil Dead universe further.”
