As 2022 comes to an end, horror fans can look back on the many titles released, including Jordan Peele’s Nope, Ti West’s Pearl and X, new entries in the Halloween, Hellraiser, Predator, and Scream franchises, and more. It seems 2023 will also have plenty to offer, with 13 anticipated titles confirmed so far.
We’ll update this list as more 2023 horror movies get release dates, so be sure to check back.
M3GAN (January 6)

Move over, Chucky; M3GAN is making her debut. Produced under Jason Blum and James Wan’s Blumhouse and Atomic Monster banners, the film is directed by Gerard Johnstone (Housebound) with a screenplay by Akela Cooper (Malignant) and a story by Wan.
M3GAN is “a lifelike doll” created to be the ultimate comfort and friend to the child who owns it. When M3GAN’s genius designer gifts her lonely, bullied niece a prototype, it spells trouble for everyone. Creepy, creepy trouble. Clips released by Blumhouse have inspired memes, Chucky battles, and even an unforgettable Halloween costume. We will soon see if the film lives up to the hype.
Infinity Pool (January 27)

Directed by Brandon Cronenberg, son of David Cronenberg and director of Possessor (2020), Infinity Pool will premiere on January 22nd at Sundance and release via Neon on the 27th.

Starring Alexander Skarsgård (True Blood), Mia Goth (Pearl, X), and Cleopatra Coleman (Dopesick), the film follows a couple “enjoying an all-inclusive beach vacation in the fictional island of La Tolqa, when a fatal accident exposes the resort’s perverse subculture of hedonistic tourism, reckless violence, and surreal horrors.”
Knock at the Cabin (February 3)

M. Night Shyamalan’s newest film has an all-star cast that includes Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter), Ben Aldridge (Pennyworth), and Rupert Grint (Harry Potter franchise). Based on the novel The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul G. Tremblay, the film will focus on a family held hostage by strangers claiming they must make a sacrifice to prevent the apocalypse.
Although Shyamalan’s last two films – Old (2021) and Glass (2019) – weren’t critical successes, many speculate that Knock at the Cabin will be the film that skyrockets him back to the top. We will find out if that’s true in February.
Cocaine Bear (February 24)

Directed by Elizabeth Banks, Cocaine Bear is exactly what the title suggests. A group of people must survive in the Georgia wilderness after a massive black bear ingests cocaine and goes into a murderous rage.
Unbelievably, the film is based on a true story of a real bear that ingested millions worth of cocaine, only to die soon after. Obviously, the movie takes liberties with the bear’s actions once high, but based on the trailer, we should be in for a wild ride.
Scream 6 (March 10)

Perhaps taking a note from Jason Voorhees, Ghostface is leaving Woodsboro and heading to the Big Apple. Picking up from 2022’s Scream 5 (titled Scream), the film will again follow sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter (played by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega) and twins Mindy and Chad (played by Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding) as they attempt to move on with their lives.

Joining the cast once again are Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Scream 4‘s Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere). Noticeably absent is Neve Campbell, who has played the legendary final girl Sidney Prescott since the first film. Per Deadline, Campbell stated:
“As a woman, I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise. It’s been a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me. I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.”
Renfield (April 14)

Based on the Bram Stoker character of the same name, Renfield will follow Dracula’s iconic henchman “who has grown sick and tired of his centuries as Dracula’s lackey. The henchman finds a new lease on life and maybe even redemption when he falls for feisty, perennially angry traffic cop Rebecca Quincy.” The titular Renfield will be played by Nicholas Hoult (The Menu), while Nicolas Cage takes on the role of Dracula.
With a story by Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) and Ryan Ridley (Rick and Morty), Chris McKay (The LEGO Batman Movie) directs the project. Alongside Hoult and Cage, Awkwafina (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) and Ben Schwartz (Sonic the Hedgehog franchise) will also star.
Salem’s Lot (April 21)

The classic Stephen King vampire novel Salem’s Lot is set for another adaptation, this time by Annabelle writer Gary Dauberman. Although the project has seen delays and still seems a bit uncertain for April 2023, we’re hoping for the best.
Salem’s Lot follows a writer named Ben Mears who returns to his hometown, only to find it infested with vampires. It has a Tobe Hooper-directed 1979 made-for-TV miniseries and 2004 miniseries, but this will be the first time the book is adapted for a feature film.
Evil Dead Rise (April 21)

As the fifth film in the Evil Dead series, this title won’t feature our hero with a boomstick, Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell), but two sisters battling against Deadites in an L.A. apartment building. Lee Cronin wrote and directed the film, with Alyssa Sutherland (TV’s Vikings) and Lily Sullivan (I Met a Girl) staring as the sisters.
While fans will surely miss Campbell in the starring role, we can still expect lots of bloody action. Cronin revealed on Twitter once the film wrapped in October 2021:
“8 months, 1 Covid Lockdown, 6,500 litres of blood, and more memories than my brain can even process. That is a wrap on #EvilDeadRise. Thank you New Zealand, it’s been a blast. Time to head home and cut this beast together.”
Insidious: The Red Door (July 7)

With a story by Insidious vet Leigh Whannell, a screenplay by Scott Teems (Halloween Kills), and franchise star Patrick Wilson getting his directorial debut, Insidious: Fear The Dark promises to be an exciting addition.

The film is “set ten years after the end of the previous first two films. Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson) heads east to drop his son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) off at an idyllic, ivy-covered university. However, Dalton’s college dream becomes a nightmare when the repressed demons of his past suddenly return to haunt them both.” With Wilson and Simpkins reprising their roles, Rose Byrne will return.
Meg 2: The Trench (August 4)

What is summer without Jason Statham battling a prehistoric creature in open water? While exact plot details are still unknown for Meg 2: The Trench, it will be based on Steve Alten’s 1999 sci-fi novel The Trench. The book sees Jonas Taylor going head-to-head with a Kronosaurus, the largest pliosaurid that measured up to 36 feet long. Still no match for the Statham, however.
Alongside Statham’s Jonas Taylor, we will also see the return of Cliff Curtis’s James “Mac” Mackreides, Page Kennedy’s DJ, and Shuya Sophia Cai’s Meiying.
The Nun 2 (September 8)

The Nun 2 is a direct sequel to 2018’s The Nun and the ninth film in the Conjuring franchise. As viewers will remember, the first film’s ending set up a sequel by revealing that Valak had possessed Maurice as he left the abbey. While the first film took place in 1952 in Romania, The Nun 2 is expected to be set four years later in France.
Taissa Farmiga will reprise her role as Sister Irene, along with Bonnie Aarons returning as Valak and Jonas Bloquet as Maurice. Added to the cast are Storm Reid (Euphoria) and Anna Popplewell (Narnia franchise).
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Wan said he knows how the sequel “ties back to Lorraine’s story that we’ve set up with the first two Conjurings and make it all come all full circle.”
The Exorcist (October 13)

David Gordon Green has concluded his Halloween trilogy. He is now taking on The Exorcist. Green will again collaborate with Scott Teems and Danny McBride, along with Peter Sattler, to bring the untitled film to life. Original star Ellen Burstyn returns as Chris MacNeil as it serves as a direct sequel to the 1973 classic. Like Halloween, this film is intended to be the first of a new trilogy.

The film’s plot is familiar: it follows “a 12-year-old girl who is possessed by a mysterious demonic entity, forcing her mother to seek the help of two priests to save her.” The project will also star Leslie Odom Jr. (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery) and Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale).
Saw X (October 27)

Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw returns in the tenth Saw film, coming just in time for Halloween. How he returns is anyone’s guess at this point, but some speculate that it could fall earlier in the timeline and serve as a prequel to the later sequels.
Kevin Greutert, who also directed Saw VI and Saw 3D, returns as director with a story by Jigsaw and Spiral: From the Book of Saw writers Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger.
