Spoilers for Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches Episode 7, “Tessa”

In last week’s episode, “Transference,” we saw Rowan go through a ritual to rid herself of Lasher once and for all, letting him choose someone who actually wanted him around. I don’t think many viewers bought it, with Lasher so keen on having Rowan’s power at his disposal. In this Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches episode 7, “Tessa, we see the ramifications of not only Rowan’s choice but the choices of others as well. Getting rid of Lasher isn’t that easy.

Tessa (Madison Wolfe), thought to be Lasher’s next choice, is captured by self-proclaimed witch hunters, who are dabbling in many things they don’t understand. It also becomes clear that Lasher is not coming to rescue Tessa, and though she tries to use her own powers to free herself, she fails, leaving her to the fate of these amateurs, who intend to burn her alive if they don’t get the answers they seek.

Meanwhile, Ciprien continues his dream walking to seek more information about the key necklace. What he soon finds out, however, is that this is all merely a trap set by Lasher to get him out of the way. Lasher could kill him, as Ciprien rightly points out, but that’s not Lasher’s style. His ego demands things to be different and more theatrical. Trapping Ciprien in this dream-like state of memories seems very cruel and on point, even with Ciprien’s actual fate unknown to Lasher once he leaves.

So the search is on for Tessa by the Mayfair clan, the search is on for Ciprien by the Talamasca, and Rowan discovers she’s pregnant in the middle of all this chaos and stress. As far as storylines go, it’s an interesting twist in an already twisted and confusing life that Rowan is now living. As people begin to whisper behind her back about her pregnancy, you can almost see the wheels turning regarding how this will affect certain people’s plans. Of course, Lasher knows, and he’s probably keenly aware of the possibilities, the power the child may possess, considering Rowan’s powers, which are still being discovered.

Cortland Mayfair gets on the phone and lets the news of Rowan’s pregnancy get out, and of course, it’s to Albrecht (Dennis Boutsikaris), Ciprien’s boss in the Talamasca. Ciprien manages to escape Lasher’s dream prison, and when he finds out about Albrecht’s plan to watch a possible old prophecy reveal itself, there is nothing he can do but watch.

This episode kept dropping the not-so-obvious clues that Rowan would have to reach out to Lasher again. She does so at the very end, trying to save Tessa’s life, dying due to a wound inflicted on her by those who intended her harm. I’m pretty sure this will be a messy reunion.

Thankfully, Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches episode 7 did what many episodes this season could not. That was to advance the story in an interesting and fun way, even if some storylines were unsurprising. Rowan being pregnant throws a wrinkle in things, and to be fair, we don’t see Lasher come back to her when she calls for him at the end of the episode, but he’ll be there. With many people having hidden agendas, some not so hidden now, it will be interesting to see how Rowan and Ciprien deal with this, the pregnancy, and Lasher, in next week’s season finale.
