While best known for his work in professional wrestling, “Macho Man” Randy Savage delved into hip-hop with the release of his rap album Be a Man in 2003. The venture into music came Savage’s career as a pro wrestler was winding down, and this was another way continuing to entertain the fans. Its titular song, “Be a Man,” had gotten a lot of attention at the time. The Hulk Hogan diss track refers to the two wrestlers’ real-life issues with Savage heavily criticizing his former ring rival.
Another song on the album, “Perfect Friend,” features a softer side of Savage. The song was written by Lanny “The Genius” Poffo, Savage’s brother, who passed away earlier this month. It’s a tribute song for Curt Hennig, aka Mr. Perfect, who had died in 2003, months before the album’s release. Savage and Hennig had been particularly close, a contrast to the relationship that the former had with Hogan at the time. Although, before his own passing in 2011, Savage had ultimately buried the hatchet with Hogan.
Additional press materials for the album state, “This rap album includes DJ Kool on the very club-like vibe, ‘Hit The Floor,’ the second single which would have been amazing to see live. It also includes Big K, Brian O, Da Raskulls, Inc., Eliott Harris, Shianna Raymona, Mo Blaze and Smokke.”
