Mia Goth in Pearl

Horror genre fan favorite Mia Goth should’ve gotten an Academy Award for her performance in Pearl, director Ti West professes. It’s a statement that many horror fans would be quick to agree with, given the acclaim she has garnered with her performances in West’s films.

After first appearing in X in March of last year, Goth led the prequel movie Pearl, which followed with a release in September, having shot back-to-back with its predecessor. Both films scored high with critics, and Goth will reunite with West to cap off the trilogy with the upcoming sequel MaXXXine.

Recently speaking with The Independent, West shared his thoughts on the Academy Awards, an award ceremony that most often snubs the horror genre. He admits it would be an honor to win an Oscar but notes that he doesn’t “really” care about them. With that being said, he declares that Goth’s work in Pearl is Oscar-worthy, agreeing with the horror fans who wanted to see her nominated, but adds that the perceived snub doesn’t detract from her performance.

“It would be dishonest to say winning an Oscar wouldn’t be awesome,” West said. “I’m sure it would be great, but if it matters all that much to you, inevitably, that’s going to make your life a downer.”

He added, “In my opinion, she deserved it, but at the same time, I don’t feel that it takes anything away from what she did. [An Oscar] would have just been a nice addition.”

It’s been teased by Goth that the third installment of the series will be the best yet. In addition to starring, Goth will also be serving as an executive producer on MaXXXine. The film doesn’t yet have an official premiere date, but a teaser trailer was previously released. Courtesy of A24, you can watch it below.
