Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer - Rey
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Star Wars Celebration 2023 has kicked off a weekend of hype surrounding all things Star Wars. Attended in person by thousands of die-hard fans, Star Wars Celebration began the weekend with quite a bang by announcing that three BRAND NEW films are on the way.

The first film will be directed by James Mangold (Logan, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) and tell the stories of the first Jedi to wield the Force. This will be set 25,000 years before the films we love and enjoy.

Star Wars veteran Dave Filoni is finally getting his own film as well. Filoni’s film will converge all current (and upcoming) Disney+ shows, such as The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, and will focus heavily on the New Republic.

Finally, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the Canadian award-winning journalist and filmmaker, will tackle Rey Skywalker’s story 15 years out from the end of the sequel trilogy as she attempts to build a new Jedi Order. Daisy Ridley will be returning as Rey!

Fans of Star Wars have a lot to be excited about. The Mangold film will give us a view of a time period that has never been explored in the current Star Wars canon. It will be great to see that and the roots of what the Jedi were and how the Force came to be.

Filoni has delivered some of the most solid Star Wars content in the franchise. While not without their flaws, the Disney+ shows have been the most consistent Star Wars has been since the Disney acquisition. Filoni (and Favreau, of course) is who we have to thank for that. Give the man the creative freedom, and whatever properties he wants, he’ll deliver.

The Rey film may be the one to be most excited about. The sequels had a lot of issues and are still a point of contention in the fandom all these years later. Obaid-Chinoy has an amazing opportunity here to fix some of that. Not only are we getting a seemingly fascinating story about the beginning of a new Jedi Order, but it also has the chance to redeem some characters from the sequels that got the short end of the lightsaber. *Cough* FINN *cough*
