The newest entry in the Evil Dead franchise has officially become the highest-grossing film in the series. Evil Dead Rise, Lee Cronin’s blood-soaked sequel, has hit more than $100 million at the worldwide box office, absolutely smashing its $19 million budget, gaining more than 32 times the worldwide gross of Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult horror hit, and outperforming Fede Álvarez’s 2013 re-telling, which hit $97.5 million.

Its breakthrough of the 100M threshold has placed it within the top 10 highest-grossing films of the year, joining surprising horror releases Scream VI and M3GAN in the top 10.

Evil Dead Rise’s instant success was a surprise for many, though its early festival reviews and high acclaim from producers Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell helped fuel the spark that turned its massive opening weekend.

The new film currently holds an 84% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, praised for its extreme gore, artistic film style, and fun performances.

Directed and written by Lee Cronin, Evil Dead Rise stars Alyssa Sutherland (Vikings), Lily Sullivan (Barkskins), Gabrielle Echols (Reminiscence), Morgan Davies (The Hunter), and Nell Fisher.

The film follows down-on-her-luck Beth (Sullivan), who goes to stay with her sister Ellie (Sutherland) and her family in their high-rise apartment after finding out she’s unexpectedly pregnant. After an earthquake uncovers a vault underneath the building, the family finds a version of the Book of the Dead, reads it and all hell breaks loose.
