I remember seeing Swamp Thing (1982) for the first time as a child, around nine or ten. After that day, I probably watched it another dozen or so times that year since it was always on HBO. Whether or not the film is considered good, it still resonates with me. MVD Rewind has launched its 4K LaserVision Collection with Wes Craven’s Swamp Thing. They’ve spared no expense in packing this set with tons of goodies, making it a smashing debut release.
In the Everglades of Florida, Dr. Alec Holland (Ray Wise) and government agent Alice Cable (Adrienne Barbeau) have developed a formula that, if used properly, could change civilization forever and end world hunger. Unfortunately, a crazed madman named Arcane (Louis Jourdan) has learned of their breakthrough and has nefarious plans of his own. He and his team storm their lab, destroy it, and steal the serum. He kidnaps Alice and leaves Dr. Holland for dead, dousing him in chemicals before making his escape.
What he doesn’t realize is Holland isn’t dead. He’s mutated by his own formula, becoming one with the swamp. He still has his mind, but now he’s half man and half plant and the strength of a dozen men. Not caring about himself, he’s about to embark on a mission to scrub out the evil Arcane and rescue Alice from his clutches.

You won’t find a better-looking version of Swamp Thing than on this release. It’s clear, the colors are vibrant, and the sound is enhanced. With that being said, the fact Dick Durock is wearing a rubber suit is much more noticeable. It doesn’t matter, though, if you already love the film for what it is, you may appreciate it even more, knowing the international release is finally available in the States. It’s only a few minutes and mostly comprises additional Adrienne Barbeau shots with even fewer clothes on than in the theatrical version.
It’s campy, comic book fun that takes me back to a simpler time, and it’s a comfort film. My only real complaint is that there isn’t enough Ray Wise, who has become one of my all-time favorite character actors. Any project would benefit by having more Ray Wise.

The two-disc set comes with the 4K and standard versions of the theatrical release and the international cut, all of which have been remastered and restored. There are two commentary tracks, one with Wes Craven moderated by Sean Clark and another with effects artist William Munns moderated by Michael Felsher, separate interviews with Barbeau, actor Reggie Batts, and Swamp Thing creator Len Wein, several more featurettes, mini-poster, and more.
I’ve held out over the years buying the film just because I wanted to have the full international cut. It was previously released overseas, but MVD’s release was definitely worth holding out for. It’s a stunning debut 4K release, and I can’t wait to see what is next in line.
