The “Monster Hero” has been reborn, as a new image reveals fans’ first look at the titular vigilante in the upcoming remake of The Toxic Avenger. The photo (seen above) comes ahead of the film’s world premiere at the Fantastic Fest 2023, where it will serve as the opening movie. Taking place in Austin, Texas, the festival starts on Sept. 21, 2023.
Previously, it was announced that Troma Entertainment was partnering up with Legendary Pictures to develop a new take on The Toxic Avenger, rebooting the franchise that began with the original film’s release in 1984. Macon Blair (I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore) was brought in to write the script and helm the film while Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) was cast to play “New Jersey’s first superhero.”

In the movie, per the official synopsis, “A horrible toxic accident transforms downtrodden janitor Winston Gooze into a new evolution of hero: THE TOXIC AVENGER! Now wielding a glowing mop with super-human strength, he must race against time to save his son and stop a ruthless and power-hungry tyrant bent on harnessing toxic superpowers to strengthen his polluted empire.”
Along with Dinklage in the lead role, the film also stars Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Sarah Niles, and Jane Levy. Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, who produced the original movie, also serve as producers on the Toxic Avenger reboot. Kaufman and Herz also directed the 1984 original, with Kaufman contributing to the story while Joe Ritter penned the script. The original film had two sequels and a soft reboot along with an animated series adaptation dubbed Toxic Crusaders.
The Toxic Avenger reboot will have its world premiere on Sept. 21 at Fantastic Fast with a wide release to follow; a specific date has yet to be announced.
