Every now and again, I’ll get a few surprises on my doorstep. Such is the case with Visual Vengeance’s release of the 1998 classic (?) Repligator, directed by Bret McCormick. He previously directed the 1986 shot on Super 8 gorefest, The Abomination, which is also getting a release from Visual Vengeance.
Visual Vengeance, an offshoot of Wild Eye Releasing, has been killing it with some of the most obscure gems they can find. I’m not sure how you’ll feel after watching Repligator, but the world is a much better place knowing it exists. Now you can own it on a special edition Blu-ray.
At a government facility, the army has teamed up with scientists to develop a machine that would serve as a replicator. The experiment doesn’t go as planned, and all the male soldiers are turned into sexy women. These women now have the ability to morph into alligators, but only when they find themselves moments away from reaching their orgasmic peaks.
With the title and the short plot synopsis, there’s no mistaking the type of film it is. Only a small, niche group of B-movie fans will be able to tolerate the ridiculously bad film. I like to think of myself as one of them. It’s not good at all. It’s actually pretty horrible, but I had to ask myself when it finished: Did I have fun? I did. I had a great time.
I watched it by myself and knew pretty quickly that it would be best viewed with friends. Not every joke hits the mark, but there was an effort there, and that’s all that really matters. There’s also plenty of skin.

The package is fully loaded with a plethora of special features like a new SD transfer from the master tapes, commentary with Sam Panico and Bill Van Ryn, commentary from Bret McCormick and Glen Coburn, an archival “Making of,” archival and new interviews with McCormick, interviews with Brinke Stevens, Carl Merrit, and Randy Clower. If that isn’t enough, they throw in some trailers, a limited slipcase, a pair of branded X-ray specs, a reversible sleeve, a folded mini-poster, and a sticker set.
You get what you pay for, and this is worth the price. If you enjoy low-brow humor, zero-budget, and watching people just having fun, I can guarantee you will, too.
