The Mortal Kombat series is known for including various fictional characters from pop culture as guest fighters, but there was one on Ed Boon’s wish list that didn’t make the cut for Mortal Kombat 1.

Previously, it was revealed how the first Kombat Pack for Mortal Kombat 1 will bring in these guest fighters: Homelander from The Boys, Omni-Man from Invincible, and John Cena’s Peacemaker from Peacemaker. Other characters are rumored to be coming into the mix soon. But it sounds like we can count out Keanu Reeves’ John Wick as being among them.

Speaking with Rolling Stone, developer and franchise co-creator Ed Boon reflected on how movies like Bloodsport and Enter the Dragon had influenced the creation of the original game. He notes how modern action movies like the John Wick series help to serve as inspiration for the newer games. Boon points to John Wick in particular, revealing how he tried to get the titular hitman added to Mortal Kombat 1.

“I could certainly see the John Wicks of the world… as a matter of fact, that is one of the ones that we tried to get – John Wick – in Mortal Kombat, and we didn’t get it,” Boon explains.

While John Wick is out of the question for now, perhaps the character could still come in one day in the future. After all, Mortal Kombat 1 finally sees Jean-Claude Van Damme lending his voice and likeness to the Johnny Cage character with an alternate skin. That’s long been on the wish list for the Mortal Kombat team, so perhaps it’s best to never say never when it comes to other possibilities.
