John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando Trailer
Focus Entertainment

One of the more surprising reveals during Thursday’s Summer Game Fest showcase was horror legend John Carpenter is working on a zombie FPS that looks like a bloody good time! John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando was officially revealed during the show alongside a gore-filled trailer full of zombies, blood, and guts, as expected from the Master of Horror himself.

Everybody knows John Carpenter, the iconic horror director, but people are still shocked to find out that Carpenter is a massive game nerd. It’s only natural for him to release a game of his own and for it to look like this! In a press release for the game, Carpenter shared his thoughts on the process:

“Look, I really like shooting zombies. They keep telling me that they’re called ‘the infected.’ Please. They’re ghouls, dude. They blow up real good and there are a ton of them. People are going to love this game.”

Carpenter is collaborating with Focus Entertainment, the studio behind World War Z: Aftermath, on the title. Toxic Commando is an ’80s horror-inspired co-op party shooter that features a band of survivors standing up against the vile armies of mutated horrors during an outbreak of supernatural chaos, all led by the terrifying Sludge God, a horror of Lovecraftian proportions.

The gameplay trailer released showcases a Left-4-Dead type game full of fun, guns, gore, and Bon Jovi. It looks like players will get to use all kinds of weapons, vehicles, and special abilities to mow down the undead hordes and end the Sludge God’s reign of terror once and for all.

No release date for John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando has been set yet, but we know there will be an early-access closed beta available on PC that you can sign up for here. When the game does release in 2024, it’ll be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC (via Epic Games Store).
