John Carpenter Escape from New York - Snake Plissken

There might be one or two more major cities for Snake Plissken to escape from, yet John Carpenter feels that Kurt Russell could do at least one more movie in the role. Carpenter and Russell collaborated on a handful of great films, with Russell playing Snake Plissken in Escape from New York and Escape from L.A. These days, Russell has been killing it as Santa Claus, but Carpenter hasn’t given up hope on seeing Russell return to his roots.

In a recent interview with Total Film (via GamesRadar), Carpenter spoke about Snake Plissken and Russell. He explains that Russell is even more passionate about the character than anyone else and was insistent on bringing him back for Escape from L.A. Though Russell hasn’t played the part in 25 years, Carpenter thinks the actor has at least one more Snake Plissken performance in him, even if it’s not likely to happen.

From the interview:

“He’s a character that Kurt is passionately fond of. He convinced me to do the sequel. There’s probably a third or maybe even fourth story about Snake. I don’t know if we’ll ever make it, but I think that he deserves it.”

Carpenter hasn’t directed a film since 2010’s The Ward, but he’s teased a return to the director’s chair for another project. In a separate interview with NME earlier this year, he named Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams as two talents he’d potentially like to work with when he gets his next film project off the ground. He also said he wanted to work with Russell again as they always got on so well together during their collaborations.

“You just don’t know what’s going to happen. I’d also really like to work with Kurt Russell again. That would be fun. We had such a good time working together,” Carpenter said.

Along with the Escape films, Russell worked with Carpenter on Elvis, The Thing, and Big Trouble in Little China. More recently, he has been playing Santa Claus in the Christmas Chronicles movies for Netflix. No word yet on when Carpenter might return to directing, but he worked on the score for Halloween Kills, which hits theaters on Oct. 15.
