Everyone hates a remake… until they don’t. In fact, some of the most fun and impressive horror movies of all time have been remakes. David Cronenberg’s The Fly was a remake of the 1950 Kurt Neumann film of the same name; John Carpenter took The Thing from Outer Space and made it his own in 1982; and Chuck Russell, the director behind A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, turned one of the most classic sci-fi B-horror movies from the ’50s into a goopy gorefest in 1988 with The Blob.
While the same success can’t typically be said for famous slasher movie remakes and reboots (looking at you, A Nightmare on Elm Street), filmmaker David Bruckner took the iconic character of Pinhead, and, in 2022, created a dark, thrilling reboot of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser, proving that even in these modern times, sometimes a remake isn’t just warranted but can be a lot of fun.
According to The Wrap, Bruckner has been tabbed to direct yet another remake of The Blob, being cited as a “reimagining” for Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group. This will be the third remake of the original story, which focuses on an alien blob terrorizing a small town and growing to a massive size after disintegrating the town’s inhabitants after it absorbs them. The original 1958 film also had a sequel in 1972, titled Beware! The Blob.

This will be a tall task for Bruckner, as the 1988 remake is seen as one of the best “cheesy horror movies” of the ’80s, and boasts some of the best (and grossest) horror special effects in the decade. Bruckner seems up to the challenge, though, as alongside his Hellraiser reboot, he’s had success in the genre with his underrated 2015 horror anthology Southbound, his 2017 adaptation of Adam Nevill’s The Ritual, and one of the best horror movies of 2020, The Night House.
Not many details have been released thus far, so it’s unclear whether Bruckner will go with the classic ’50s monster movie style, or add a modern sci-fi spin to the franchise for his upcoming reimagining. We’ll keep you updated as more details are released!
