Shudder has announced that the paranormal film Oddity will have its world premiere at SXSW 2024 in the Midnighter Section. This is the second feature from writer-director Damian McCarthy, who released Caveat in 2020. Oddity is set for a streaming release this summer.

Oddity follows a blind medium who uncovers the truth behind her sister’s death with the help of a frightening wooden mannequin. It stars Gwilym Lee (Bohemian Rhapsody), Carolyn Bracken (You Are Not My Mother), Caroline Menton, Tadhg Murphy, Steve Wall, Jonathan French, and Joe Rooney.

Director Damian McCarthy stated, “Shudder gave me an opportunity to build on what I learned from my first horror film, Caveat. I couldn’t have asked for better collaborators in making something as creepy and strange as Oddity. I’ve been a fan of SXSW for years, watching interviews with filmmakers and taking note of the films that have launched there, so having this premiere there is a huge achievement that I’m very proud of.”

“Damian McCarthy made his feature film debut on Shudder with the highly original and unsettling Caveat, and we’re thrilled to team up with him again to bring his new eerie vision to life,” said Emily Gotto, Shudder’s VP of Global Acquisitions & Co-Productions. “We expect Oddity to crawl under everyone’s skin, and a couple of nightmares to get a visit from the film’s wooden mannequin.”

Shudder, Keeper Pictures, and Nowhere produced the film.

Caveat is a Shudder Original starring Ben Caplan, Johnny French, and Leila Sykes. The film follows a lone drifter suffering from partial memory loss who accepts a job looking after a psychologically troubled woman in an abandoned house on an isolated island. It had its world premiere at Ireland’s IndieCork Film Festival in October 2020 before landing on the Shudder streaming service.
