The Thing, Computer Artworks’ 2002 video game sequel to the 1982 film of the same name, is getting the remaster treatment from Nightdive Studios. It was originally released via Konami’s Black Label Games on PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC.
The game takes place after the events of the John Carpenter film, which starred Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, Keith David, T. K. Carter, and David Clennon. The film follows “a research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims.”
In the game, players take on the role of Captain J.F. Blake, the leader of a special forces rescue team investigating the events that transpired earlier with MacReady (Kurt Russell) and crew. After getting themselves stuck in a similar situation as the last group, Blake must keep his team together and gain their trust, or else…well, you know the rest.
The Thing: Remastered is set to run at up to 4K Resolution at 120 FPS on next-gen hardware. The studio has also made improvements to character models, textures, and animations. Achievements and trophies have also been added on consoles and PC.

Last year, Diarmid Campbell, one of The Thing’s original programmers, reflected on the game with Syfy, saying, “[If] we had more experience, we probably wouldn’t have made such a good game. I think we were reaching far beyond our capabilities. And as a result, we created something better. Had we known better, we would have been more conservative; we would never have tried to do anything quite so complicated and ambitious.”
Recently behind the highly regarded revivals of Star Wars: Dark Forces and System Shock, Nightdive Studios is no stranger to remastering the classics. The studio is also hard at work on Killing Time Resurrected, SiN Reloaded, and System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition.
Set to release later this year, Nightdive Studios’ The Thing: Remastered is coming to PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. Check out the official reveal trailer below!
