The Exorcist is going in another direction after David Gordon Green’s legacy sequel, The Exorcist: Believer, fell far short of studio expectations. As previously announced, horror mastermind Mike Flanagan was brought on board to direct a new take on The Exorcist. Now, it’s been confirmed when the new movie will be released.

Per Variety, Flanagan’s The Exorcist has been dated for a theatrical release on March 12, 2027. That will come a year after the original plan for the film’s release, which was initially gunning to arrive this coming March. It’s also confirmed that the film will star MCU star Scarlett Johansson alongside young actor Jacobi Jupe (Hamnet).

There’s no word at this time if any franchise stars will return for the new movie from Flanagan. Though it’s been described as a “radical new take” on The Exorcist, it’s also been reported that the film will still be set in the same universe as the original film released back in 1973. It’s also unclear if the new film will acknowledge the events of The Exorcist: Believer, but at the very least, it will not be a direct sequel, focusing on different characters with a fresh story.

After the financial success of Blumhouse’s Halloween trilogy, director David Gordon Green was tapped to revitalize The Exorcist. Universal had high hopes for what Green could do with the franchise, spending a whopping $400 million to secure the rights to a new trilogy. The first installment of the planned trilogy, 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer, earned just $136 million worldwide. It was also pummeled with negative reviews. Plans to develop a sequel, dubbed The Exorcist: Deceiver, were subsequently scrapped.

The Exorcist will be released on March 12, 2027.
