After ten movies, the Saw franchise is still going strong. Saw X was met with some rather high praise upon release, leaving many fans excited to see where the visceral horror movie series will go next. Saw 11 will also see original Saw director James Wan return in the most hands-on way he’s been with the franchise since the very first film.

The latest update on Saw 11 comes from Wan in a new interview with Letterboxd. Wan teased that his primary goal for Saw 11 is to make the franchise “scary again,” putting it in line with the original film. While this means taking some inspiration with what he and Leigh Whannell had done with the first Saw, Wan also explained that he wants to do something that hasn’t been done before over the course of the ten previous films with Saw 11.

“For me to finally come back to it, I feel I have probably the freshest outlook,” Wan said. “I feel I can come back to it with a new perspective whilst knowing that with this next movie I want to hark back to the spirit of the first movie. One of the things I really want to do with this next Saw is make it scary again. I want to make a scary Saw—not just gory, but psychologically scarring, like what Leigh and I did in the first movie.”

He continued, “Leigh and I both want to recapture the spirit of that first film and revisit Jigsaw’s philosophy, which is that he goes after people who don’t appreciate their lives. If you’re a scumbag, but you appreciate your life, he doesn’t see you as someone who’s wasting your life, so I want to go back to what we touched on in the first movie with regard to that.”

“At the same time, I want to honor what people have come to love about the franchise, whilst trying to do something fresh and new that we haven’t seen before,” Wan added. “This next movie would be the eleventh installment, and there’ve been lots of films in this world. We need to do something different in order to reach out to a new generation that didn’t grow up with it.”

One burning question that many fans will have is if Tobin Bell will return as Jigsaw. While the character was killed off fairly early into the movie series, Saw X brought him back as a main character by going back in time. Saw 11 could very well take a similar approach if the movie is set before Jigsaw’s death. As of now, however, no casting information or plot details have been confirmed, leaving it still unclear if and how Bell’s Jigsaw will be involved.

Saw 11 was initially dated for a release in 2024; that date was pushed to 2025 before the film was pulled from the release schedule altogether. Last year, it was reported that Saw 11 would be moving forward under the watch of Blumhouse Productions. Blumhouse’s Jason Blum said at the time that the plan was to get Wan back on board to help reinvent the franchise, but no major updates have since been revealed.

Saw 11 does not yet have a set premiere date.
