Pulp Fiction helmet Quentin Tarantino ruffled a lot of feathers when he made it clear he’s not a fan of Matthew Lillard. During an appearance on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, Tarantino admitted he doesn’t “care for” Lillard as an actor, comparing him to Paul Dano and Owen Wilson. These comments conjured up heavy controversy, as fans came out in droves on social media to condemn Tarantino’s comments, heaping high praise onto Lillard, Dano and Wilson.

In a new interview with People, Lillard spoke about how it felt to be criticized by Tarantino. It’s a double-edged sword for the Scream franchise star, who says it “sucked” to hear, given that he would “love” to work with Tarantino. At the same time, he’s been happy for all of the support he’s gotten from others in Hollywood along with all of his fans.

“I think he’s a lovely filmmaker, and to just sort of get punched in the mouth just was kind of a bummer,” Lillard said.

The Five Nights at Freddy’s actor also stated, “Everyone, from the people at the mall this weekend with my kids to George Clooney and James Gunn and Mike Flanagan, I mean, people have sort of been really generous with telling me how much they loved me and liked my work… At the end of the day, it was kind of lovely.”

It would appear that Lillard’s chances of appearing in Tarantino’s tenth and final feature film are slim to none. Still, fans will have many other opportunities to see Lillard on the big screen. He’s returning to theaters for the release of Scream 7 on Feb. 27, reprising his role as Stu Macher from the original Scream from 1996. He is also set to appear in Tony Gilroy’s upcoming drama Behemoth!, co-starring alongside Pedro Pascal and Olivia Wilde.
