Without a doubt, one of the craziest programs currently on television is the Adult Swim series, Rick and Morty. From Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, the animated series follows the insane adventures of a drunken mad scientist and his timid nephew. Each episode is unique and oddly compelling, and despite how out there the show appears, it’s incredibly well written.
Three seasons later, Rick and Morty is finally getting the love it deserves from the Emmys. At the 2018 Creative Arts Emmy Awards, the series just earned a huge win by nabbing the award for Outstanding Animated Program. This was due to the nomination of Season 3’s “Pickle Rick” episode, which sees Rick turn into, well, a pickle. This is no surprise, as that episode has become one of the most memorable of the series so far.
Rick and Morty beat out some solid competition to take the win. The other nominees were Big Hero 6: The Series for “Baymax Returns” (Disney XD), Bob’s Burgers for “V For Valentine-detta” (Fox), The Simpsons for “Gone Boy” (Fox), and South Park for “Put It Down” (Comedy Central). These are all solid shows, but I’d still have been shocked if “Pickle Rick” didn’t take the win.
This is not only the first Emmy win for Rick and Morty, but the first win in the category for Adult Swim. As the series only seemed to get better and better as it went on, however, it seems almost certain there will be more Emmy wins in the future. But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves, and wait for them to get here first!
Rick and Morty was fortunately renewed earlier this year by the network, amid uncertainty about the show’s future. The network put in an astonishing order of 70 more episodes, and Harmon and Roiland have been hard at work creating the new content. Unfortunately, there’s no word yet on when Season 4 will officially premiere, but the new episodes will presumably begin airing sometime in 2019.
