These days, nostalgia is in, and Nintendo has been taking full advantage of it. We’ve seen the rebirth of both the NES and the SNES as official mini-consoles – tiny versions of the classic systems which come preloaded with tons of games. They practically fly off the shelves the moment they’re stocked, and gamers made it clear there’s a huge market for classic gaming.
Sony isn’t oblivious to the attention these mini-consoles have been receiving, and as of today, they’ve officially announced the PlayStation Classic. A miniature version of the classic Sony PlayStation (PS1), the system will come with a price tag of $99.99 USD (€99.99 in Europe). The console will be arriving just in time for the holiday season, hitting shelves on Dec. 3, 2018.
The PlayStation Classic comes with two DualShock controllers and an HDMI cable. While it comes with a USB power cable, it does not come with the AC adapter to plug it into the wall. If you have one already, great! If not, you’ll have to buy one separately to be able to power on and use the console, or connect the USB cable to an alternate power source. Admittedly, this is slightly frustrating, although Nintendo’s SNES Classic came packaged the same way.
A total of 20 games will come preloaded on the console, but only five of those have been officially announced so far. Confirmed titles to be included are Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms. We can only speculate on what the remaining 15 games will be, but if none of the classic Resident Evil games make it on here, that would be nothing short of a travesty.
With some luck, you’ll be able to find and buy the PlayStation Classic when it goes on sale on Dec. 3, 2018.
