MGM’s remake of Tom Holland’s 1988 film Child’s Play is speeding through pre-production. The project is finalizing its cast, as Aubrey Plaza and Brian Tyree Henry are in talks to take on the lead roles. Although details on the exact story were mostly unknown, what has been clear from the start is that this reboot will have nothing to do with any of the Child’s Play or Chucky films released so far, presenting a new version of the killer doll.
Word about the plot is that this doll will be technologically advanced. The reason behind his killing spree is due to some coding in its hardware, turning the doll murderous. No voodoo spells or serial killers named Charles Lee Ray will be present in the story here, leading fans to wonder what exactly this little robot doll was going to look like.
Today, the first look at the new Chucky has been revealed. From MGM-owned Orion Pictures on Twitter, a peek at the killer doll gives fans an idea of what to expect. With a caption reading, “Wanna play? Your best friend is getting an update,” we can see a familiar freckle-faced doll, preparing to cause some damage with a kitchen knife.

While we now know that the new doll will resemble Chucky, we haven’t yet been given an official answer as to if that’s what they will call him. Ideally, the doll would have an new name and look completely different, so no new version could ever compare to the one created by Don Mancini with Brad Dourif’s voice. Still, it feels like naming him Chucky is just a bad idea.
Production is now under way on the Child’s Play remake, and a release date of the summer or fall of 2019 seems likely. There’s no official release date yet attached, so we’ll have to wait and see. Stay tuned.
