Review: ‘Iron Sky: The Coming Race’ is Hilariously Bonkers

If you’re looking for something new and different to watch, Iron Sky: The Coming Race is not like anything you could’ve ever imagined you’d see. From director Timo Vuorensola, the whacked-out sci-fi action film serves as a sequel to Vuorensola’s 2012 movie Iron Sky, though seeing the new one doesn’t require first watching the original. After obtaining its funding through a successful Indiegogo campaign, the film was released earlier this year in Finland and will be available in select theaters and On Demand / Digital HD on July 19.

As you’ll find out in the film’s opening narration, the story is set years in the future after a nuclear war on Earth which has decimated the planet. The only safe refuge for what’s left of humanity is at a former Nazi Moonbase, but hope begins to fade with overpopulation and dwindling resources threatening their survival. The story’s narrator, Obi, learns that the answers to their problems lies within the Holy Grail, which is hidden away in Earth’s hollow center. This means taking along a crew for a voyage to the Hollow Earth, which is guarded by an ancient race of shapeshifting reptilian world leaders.

One aspect where The Coming Race really shines is with its characters. Its narrator and primary protagonist Obi is very likable, thanks in part to her performance by Lara Rossi. Stephanie Paul is also particularly entertaining in her role as the former president of the United States. For fans of Tom Green, however, the most hilarious character of them all might be Donald – the leader of a new religious movement called Jobsism which follows the teachings of Steve Jobs. Just try to imagine a cult leader who kills those who seek ringtones or wallpapers for their iPhones outside of the default selections. With the vibe of Marshall Applewhite with a technological twist, the character is both very funny and really creepy at the same time.

The ridiculousness you’ve just read only scratches the surface of the insanity to be found within Iron Sky: The Coming Race. While you might expect a movie like this to be cheesy, however, it’s surprisingly very well-made. The FX and CGI look fantastic, and the comic nature of the film is truly hilarious at times. Of course, a movie featuring a scene with a reptilian Adolf Hitler (played by Udo Kier, no less) chasing the heroes on a Tyrannosaurus Rex is definitely not a film for everyone. However, if you leave your brain at the door and bring along some popcorn, you’ll probably have a great time watching the movie.

Iron Sky: The Coming Race will be available to see via On Demand / Digital HD and in select theaters on July 19. You can check out the official trailer and poster art below!
