‘Cobra Kai’ Is Getting a Tie-In Comic Book Series

While we all wait for the third season of Cobra Kai to debut on YouTube Premium, an official comic book series tie-in will arrive this fall to help hold us over. According to THR, IDW Publishing will release a new comic set in the same continuity of the series and the Karate Kid movie trilogy. Called Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues, it will begin with a four-part retelling of the events of the original movie, but from the point-of-view of antagonist Johnny Lawrence.

Dubbed “Johnny’s Story,” the comic is written by Denton J. Tipton (Transformers) with art by Kagan McLeod (Infinite Kung-Fu). “I saw The Karate Kid for the first time during a lock-in at the Y [and] the skeleton costumes captured my attention, while the Miyagi-isms pulled me into the story. And like everyone else at the time, I caught Karate Kid fever,” Tipton said in a statement. “Fast-forward 35 years, and being just a small part of the franchise has made me feel young and inspired all over again.”

Cobra Kai brought a very interesting twist to the story of The Karate Kid when it first debuted, as it primarily follows a former antagonist of the franchise. Although Johnny Lawrence had previously clashed with Danny LaRusso, he has proven to be just as much of an interesting character himself in the first two seasons of the YouTube series. Viewership for the show has been tremendously high, and a tie-in comic book is a fun way to give big fans of the franchise even more new content.

Season 3 of Cobra Kai will be on YouTube Premium in 2020, but the first two seasons can be streamed anytime in full by subscribers. For those on the bubble, the first episodes from each season are free-to-watch online. As for Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues, look for the comic book series to first hit shelves this fall.
