‘Resident Evil’ Movie Reboot Will Be ‘Super, Super Scary’

After six movies, director Paul W. S. Anderson and star Milla Jovovich ended their run of Resident Evil movies with 2016’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. It has since been reported that the film series will continue with an upcoming reboot, and now director Johannes Roberts says the film is in active development. Speaking with Screen Rant, Roberts also opens up a bit on the tone of the movie, suggesting it will be much scarier than the action-oriented films from Anderson and Jovovich.

From Screen Rant:

We are in active development of that at the moment. I pitched them a take, and they really loved it. So, we are just gearing up on that as we speak, really. I’m in the office all the time there. So, yeah, it’s great. It’s gonna be super scary. It’s super, super scary. And it’s just getting back to the roots of the game. I think, at the moment, I’m not really allowed to say much more than that. But it’s gonna be a lot of fun.

The Resident Evil movies were undoubtedly successful, pulling in insane amounts of cash in tickets sales across the globe with each release. Still, many fans of the original game (myself included) would have preferred something with more horror and less action. If the film series is getting rebooted, now’s the time to bring the franchise back to its roots.

In a way, this echoes what’s happened with the video game series from Capcom. While the official sequels evolved to be very heavy on the action, Resident Evil VII gave the series a complete horror makeover, giving players something more like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and less like Rambo III.

What we know so far about the new movie isn’t much, but so far, it sounds promising. Stay tuned for more updates.
