Something Borderlands always does really well is cramming an infinite amount of references and Easter eggs in each game. Whether it be character nods, weapon names/text, etc., Borderlands 3 is no exception to this. There are a TON of great Easter eggs in Borderlands 3, here are just a few of the best ones we’ve seen.
1Under Taker – Pandora
Near the start of the game, you’ll get a side mission that requires you to retrieve a certain pair of undergarments back from the notorious ‘Under Taker’. This is a reference to the WWE legend, Undertaker. Both characters also wear a fashionable black hat.
2Mines of Moria – Pandora
During a side mission on Pandora, you’ll find yourself exploring an old abandoned mine. With enough exploring, you will end up in a room that, unlike Gandalf, you WILL have memory of this place. It’s the tomb in the Mines of Moria from Lord of the Rings, except instead of Balin’s resting place, you will find a chest of loot in its place. Explore a little more and find a quest object near a well. As you approach the well, you will hear a sound of a skeleton falling down it. Fool of a Took!
3Telltale Reference – Promethea
During a certain sequence on Promethea, you get to a point where you are talking to Rhys. He asks if you think he should shave his siege mustache. Whichever answer you give, the game will give you a notification ‘Rhys Will Remember That’. This is a rather clever nod to the Telltale Games’ choice system. Rhys also first appears in Tales From The Borderlands, which was a Telltale Games (RIP) property.
4Downton Abbey – Pandora
On Pandora, during one of the first of ‘Hammerlock’s Legendary Hunts’, you face off against a rather persistent Varkid. This one Varkid is actually several members of the Crawley (Crawly) family from Downton Abbey that constantly metamorphosizes into different members from the family. If you look closely you can also see some top hats and mustaches to top it all off.
5Pain and Terror/Penn and Teller – Pandora
A little later on in the game, you come up against two maniacal bosses who run a sort of live-stream pledge drive event on Pandora. This dastardly duo is Pain and Terror. If the names sound familiar, it’s because it’s a play on Penn and Teller, and the famous pair actually lend their voices to the characters in the game.
6Bonesaw (Spider-Man) – Road Warrior Artifact
This unique artifact found randomly in the game is called the Road Warrior (a reference in itself to the Mel Gibson Mad Max film). But even better, in the flavor text of the stat descriptions, ‘Bonesaw Is READY’ can be found. A reference to the fictional wrestler character, Bonesaw, played by Macho Man Randy Savage in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man.
7Buff Film Buff (Tommy Wiseau) – Pandora
Later in the game, when some of the closed-off areas of Pandora open up, you are able to do a side-mission for the ‘Buff Film Buff’. The second you approach the guy, you’ll realize it’s supposed to be Tommy Wiseau (the visionary behind The Room). Tommy didn’t actually lend his voice to the game, but the impression is eerily close. The Buff Film Buff is fed up because no one understands his cinematic genius and someone threw his film in the trash! Help him get his film on the big screen and he will reward you with big bunches of cash because he ‘has lots of money for some reason’.
These are just some of the awesome Borderlands 3 Easter eggs we thought were worth highlighting. Which ones are your favorite? Have a favorite that’s not on the list? Let us know!
