Who among us from the NES days of video games doesn’t remember Battletoads? The classic characters are probably best remembered for appearing in the Battletoads games of the early ’90s, although the franchise appeared to go away just as quickly as it arrived. Still, because of the memorable characters — and the punishing, brutal difficulty. Even if beating them required a Game Genie, the games were pretty fun for their time, leaving a fond nostalgia for old-school gamers who still remember playing them so many years ago.
Now, 26 years later, the Battletoads are returning with an all new game. Merely called Battletoads, the reboot brings back Rash, Pimple, and Zitz to bash their way through a series of side-scrolling levels once again, each fighting toad equipped with their own unique playstyles. Utilizing hand-drawn cartoon graphics, the new Battletoads looks amazing as well, offering modern visual upgrades to the characters while maintaining their classic, nostalgic appearances.
While we would expect for their to be some challenge with the new Battletoads, otherwise it wouldn’t really capture the spirit of the original, modern advancements in video gaming — notably autosaving and the ability to keep trying at a particular spot you’re stuck at — should presumably make the new one a bit less frustrating and hopefully more fun. Of course, the game will also offer 3-player cooperative play, meaning you and two pals can bash your way through each level like so many of us used to do in the 90s.
Battletoads will release on Aug. 20 on Xbox One, Windows 10, and Steam. Better yet, Xbox Game Pass subscribers will be able to download and play the game on the same day. Game Pass subscribers can also go ahead and pre-install the game now so it’s ready to play immediately on Aug. 20. You can watch the trailer below!
