San Diego Comic-Con is the largest pop culture convention in the world. It has been running for almost 50 years and hosts all the top names from the worlds of comics, television, movies and more.
But if like me you missed out on all the fun, don’t worry because we have a roundup of all the coolest news from all 4 days.
Scroll down for more.
JUSTICE LEAGUE
Probably the biggest event of the Comic-Con weekend was the unveiling of the Justice League one sheet and pseudo-trailer.
The trailer, which was actually just teaser footage for those attending SDCC, was largely focused on Bruce Wayne’s attempts to recruit members for the Justice League, predominantly Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, who appears to be a massive douche bag … but those eyes …. Swoon.
The tone is very light-hearted in places, which is a refreshing change from Batman Vs Superman, which for many was a tad too somber. There’s also some awesome battle footage with Wonder Woman and a neat sequence involving Momoa in full on Moses mode, parting the sea.
Superman appears in the poster too, but c’mon, your 5-year-old nephew new he wasn’t staying dead for long. The bigger question is if Supe’s does end up being resurrected whose side will he be on?
WONDER WOMAN
Sticking with the DC theme, Wonder Woman received her first trailer this weekend as well. We’ve covered this already here.
KONG: SKULL ISLAND
The King is back! Conic-Con saw the first trailer land for Kong: Skull Island, and this time the titular ape is H-U-G-E!
The film stars Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman and Tom Hiddleston, and looks amazing.
Fingers cross for a Godzilla cameo!
THE WALKING DEAD
We’ve already covered it here, but perhaps the biggest horror news from the 4 days was the unveiling of the official trailer for Season 7 of AMC’s The Walking Dead.
The trailer, which gave us our first peek at Ezekiel and his MASSIVE Tiger Shiva, largely focuses on the characters not featured in the end of season line-up so as not to give away who survives the first meeting with Negan. Although very little is given away in the 3 minutes’ tease it’s clear to see that nothing will ever be the same again.
CAPTAIN MARVEL
The Marvel Universe has its first female solo hero, and her name is Captain Marvel.
The casting of Brie Larson in the role has been rumored for months, but it’s just been confirmed this weekend.
GHOST RIDER JOINS AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D
I don’t know about you but I really enjoyed the last series of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The 2 previous seasons have, for me, been too long and a bit of a chore to watch. Well, things look to be getting even more interesting following the announcement that Ghost Rider will be joining the show.
Anyone fearing a Nicholas Cage return need worry no more though, as it will be Marvel’s latest incarnation of the vengeful spirit Robbie Reyes that we see on screen, not Johnny Blaze.
THE DEFENDERS
Netflix continued its symbiotic relationship with all things Marve by unveiling the artwork for its upcoming event series The Defenders, featuring Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones.
THOR: RAGNAROK
Fans in attendance at the Thor panel were treated to some rough footage from the new Thor movie, featuring Thor with short hair and war paint, Jeff Goldblum sitting alongside Loki and Hulk coming face to face with Surtur, the beast that is said to bring around Ragnarok in Norse mythology. Could this be the big bad for the new movie? Probably, but it’s more likely that the beast is having its strings pulled by someone else. No prizes for guessing who.
It’s also been rumored that Thor: Ragnarok will crossover with the Planet Hulk story arc, which is likely to be insane.
AMERICAN GODS
Another long awaited event this weekend at Comic-Con was the first clip from Starz adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, and fans were not disappointed.
The clip, which you can see below, previews Shadow Moon’s journey into the world of the Gods.
The full series arrives next year.
SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING
Spider-Man’s first solo movie since coming back to the Marvel Universe is due out soon, and it’s been announced that Vulture will be the villain of the piece.
The Comic-Con announcement was made in a short video clip, which sadly Marvel has gone to great lengths to keep off the internet. We’re sure a mobile phone version will find its way on to YouTube soon enough.
Apparently the John Hughes influence was very obvious from the footage.
STAR TREK: THE TV SERIES
Holy shit, the U.S.S. Discovery, designation NCC-1031 has landed, and to make it even cooler it’s based on an original design for the first Star Trek movie.
Details for the new TV series were few and far between. However, series showrunner Bryan Fuller had the following to say:
“What the new series has to do is continue to be progressive, [to] push boundaries and tell stories in the legacy Gene Roddenberry promised, giving us hope for the future”
The series will debut on CBS next January, and will also run on Netflix.
GUARDIAN’S OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2
Guardians of the Galaxy was the surprise hit of 2014, and fans have been holding their breath ever since for even a hint of a sequel.
Well, wait no more. Marvel unveiled the news that Chris Sullivan will be playing Taserface, a villainous Raveger, and Sly Stallone – who we’ve known would appear for some time – will head up the Nova Corps. The most exciting news though came when none other than Kurt F’ing Russell was announced as Ego, the father of Star-Lord. That’s right, Russell is playing a character who, in the comics, appears as a giant, purple planet!
Inspired casting.
