If you’ve seen fashion designer Tom Ford’s writing/directing debut, A Single Man, you’re familiar with his unique visual cinematic quality. Much like Single Man, the talk of his 2nd movie, Nocturnal Animals, from various ongoing film festivals is identical.
At Venice Film Festival, which ended a few days ago, Animals claimed the Grand Jury Prize (which is essentially 2nd place overall of all films shown), and that’s likely just the start of this film’s journey into award-land.
Critics are heaping quite a bit of praise on Nocturnal Animals, specifically citing the immersive non-linear narrative structure and Amy Adams’ leading performance. I’ve seen an argument that Adams should both be nominated for her performance here and in Arrival for this year, so it sounds like either way, she’ll be leaving the Oscars next year with some gold, as will this entire production.

Regarding the narrative, much like Single Man, Animals‘ story is told with, seemingly, a stream of consciousness. Although, unlike Single Man, this cinematic thriller tells 3 stories at once. One consists of Adams’ character post-divorce from Jake Gyllenhaal’s character; one tells the story of their relationship while they were together; one plays out a novel Gyllenhaal wrote for Adams’ character.
With that said, don’t expect to make much sense of this trailer, but do get appropriately hyped for this star-studded movie’s arrival on December 9th!
