Steep follows the player as they navigate the snowy Alps, which can be freely explored. The player can switch between walking, skiing, snowboarding, paragliding, or wingsuit flying. There are many activities to complete for each, including races, which require you to make the fastest time or finish first; and stunt courses, which require you to earn the most points by performing tricks.
Gameplay:
Steep’s mechanics are very reminiscent of similar sports titles, such as Skate. There is a trick system that allows players to perform stunts in mid-air, which awards them points. Be mindful when you make a jump, though; if you’re not careful, the g-Force will knock you on your ass. Watch out for those trees, too.
A cool feature is the use of the GoPro camera: you can pause the game and watch a replay of your last trial. Switch between different perspectives (first-person, third, or free-fly camera), watch it in slow motion, and save it to show your friends. You can even create your own challenge course and share it with the community.
Explore:
While you’re free to explore the world of Steep, it takes a while to hike up a mountain. Luckily, players can fast travel to new activities when they are discovered. Binoculars can be used to scout for and mark said activities. There are many activities to stay busy.
The game is online-focused. You will be able to interact with many players from all over the world in the same server and complete activities together. If you’re not looking, you might end up colliding with them.
Play how you want! There are four different play styles in the game that reward the player based on how they play. As the Explorer, explore the world and discover new locations and challenges. The Freestyler focuses on accurately performing tricks. If you want to be rewarded for being ridiculous and crashing, play as the Bone Collector. Or if you want to play all three, then you’re the Freerider. Edgar Winter would be proud of you.
Express Yourself!
In Steep, there are multiple playable characters of each gender with their own unique customization features. Completing races and other challenges, and ranking up will unlock new clothing and gear for each rider. Clothing items range from beanies, jackets, pants, goggles and shoes to reindeer costumes and glowing wingsuits. There is no shortage of unique items.
