In a move that has seemingly come out of nowhere, BBC America has announced they are working with Kevin Smith to produce a live action TV series based on Sam and Twitch, the homicide detectives who shot to infamy way back in the days of the original Spawn comic book series.

According to a report from Deadline, Smith will write, direct and executive produce and is described as being “beyond excited.” For those of us in the UK, a Spawn spin off seems an unlikely choice for the network that traditionally likes to play it safe.

No details have yet been released as to when the show will air, or what stage it is even at in terms of the writing. It’s also way too soon to even begin to discuss casting choices, although we wouldn’t be too surprised to see a few Viewaskewniverse alumni turn up at some point.

Exciting though this news may be, it must also be somewhat bittersweet for fans who have been holding out for a Spawn reboot in the not too distant future. However, this is as good a way as any to reintroduce the character without over exposing him. Whether original creator Todd McFarlane is in any way involved has not yet been confirmed.

We’ll have more on this exciting news over the coming months.
