Remember last month when Neill Blomkamp asked fans on Twitter if they’d buy his “experimental short films” on Steam? Well, it looks like the project is ready to go, if his new Oats: Volume 1 trailer is anything to go by.

Blomkamp, the guy behind movies like District 9, Chappie and Elysium, will be releasing a series of short films, via his company Oats Studios. It is believed that if the shorts are successful enough, then they would be made into full length features over time.

The first trailer, which is simply titled Oats: Volume 1, appears to be a science fiction tale, with shots of aliens and discussions that aliens have landed on Earth with the sole purpose of wiping us out. It looks equal parts brilliant and bonkers, which is pretty much Blomkamp’s m.o. at this point.

Blomkamp had been stirring the geek pot, so-to-speak, for some time, teasing his own follow up to 1986’s Aliens, in which the character of Hicks and Newt had both survived hyperspace. Needless to say, it sounded like the coolest idea ever created, but sadly the project looks to be dead in the wate … or, erm, space for that matter.

Fans will have noticed though, that at around the 40 second mark, there’s an appearance by none other than Sigourney Weaver – although it’s a real blink and you’ll miss it moment. If this is the only time Blomkamp and Weaver get to work together on an alien flick though, we certainly ain’t complaining.

Oats: Volume 1 is coming soon. The trailer is available now.
