Who watches the Watchmen? Well, HBO is hoping you will when it brings the famed graphic novel to television.
Following the cancellation of his brilliant but bizarre series The Leftovers, Damon Lindelof has apparently agreed to take charge of a new adaptation of Alan Moore’s seminal comic book, originally published between 1986 and 1987.
This wouldn’t be the first time Watchmen has been adapted. Zack Snyder (300, Man of Steel, Batman V Superman) was one in a long list of names approached to turn Moore’s work into a movie. He did just that in 2009, and although this writer truly loved it, the majority of fans took a massive dump on Snyder’s Watchmen. As a result, the film made only $185.3 million worldwide, against its $130 million budget.
Alan Moore has been forever critical of Hollywood’s attempts to bring his work to life. Over the years we’ve seen adaptations of From Hell, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, V for Vendetta, and The Killing Joke – none of which have ever been endorsed by the grumpy native of Northampton. With that being said, it’s almost a given that he will be in no way involved in HBO’s TV series.
Lindelof has stated that he has been a long-time fan of the comic books, and their influence has long been present in his own work. Whether he will stay true to the original story, or veer off in a whole new direction, remains to be seen. A Watchmen TV series will offer a nice alternative though, for viewers who find themselves a little lost when Game of Thrones finally concludes next year.
All we ask though Damon, is please, no uncomfortably long sex scenes this time. Okay?
