The world’s most famous Vampire is getting revamped! Dracula, the Prince of Darkness, is set to rise from his grave once more, thanks in no small part to the team that brought us Sherlock.
Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss last worked together in January of this year, producing what was very likely the final episode of hip hit series Sherlock, but have also previously worked together on episodes of Doctor Who. With Moffat’s recent departure from the Whovian Universe, and Sherlock taking a leave of absence, the eccentric Brits have opted to revive the infamous vampire for television as their next sure fire success story.
“It’s early days and the BBC has not seen a script yet but they are close to signing a deal for a series of 90-minute films of Dracula” – BBC Spokesperson
It is still very early in the development of Dracula, so there isn’t a great deal of additional information available to us. There is currently no script, and certainly no cast, so it will be interesting to see who finds themselves in the key roles. The other burning question is whether the latest re imagining of Bram Stoker’s classic horror will be set in the present day, like Sherlock, or if it will be set in the past. Given Moffat and Gatiss’ penchant for the bizarre, we’d love to see the series take place in its original Gothic setting.
We can only hope that a Moffat/Gatiss Dracula will have more success than the dire 2013 NBC series starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, which received a swift stake through the heart after only one season.
According to UK website the Radio Times, the series is likely to air in 2019.
