Suicide Squad 2

Spanish horror director Jaume Collet-Serra is currently the front runner to helm the sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad, the imaginatively titled Suicide Squad 2.

Collet-Serra, who is predominantly known for his 2005 House of Wax remake starring Paris Hilton, is not the first name that comes to mind when you think of superhero ensemble movies. But maybe that’s what the series needs, after such lukewarm reviews of David Ayer’s first movie.

For the uninitiated, Suicide Squad tells the tale of a bunch of DC Comics biggest ne’er-do-wells who are forced to become a crack task force to carry out a top secret mission, working as expendable assets for the U.S. Government. The film was a change in direction for the ‘If it isn’t Batman or Superman no one cares’ execs at Warner Bros, and also the first DC movie to feature beloved character Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), and brought together an eclectic cast including Will Smith and…sigh, Jared Letto, who hammed it up as The (worst) Joker (ever).

Despite being critically panned, the original Suicide Squad grossed $745 million at the global box office, making it a bonafide hit in the eyes of studio execs. With numbers like that a sequel was inevitable, and for a long time DC were reportedly courting Mel Gibson for the job. Exactly what caused this pretty huge U-turn is anybody’s guess.

A Suicide Squad sequel will be just one of many spin-offs from the original movie, with solo runs for characters like Katana, Deadshot and Harley all lined up in the very near future. For now though, we’ll wait and see what happens when Suicide Squad 2 is unleashed in Spring 2016.
